5D Mark II photo samples

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Our friends from Photographyblog have posted sample pictures from their EOS 5D Mark II taken using a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 and a Canon EF 70-200 f/a lens. The file format used is 21MP “fine” JPEG and “standard picture style”. There are movies too.

If you missed it, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II got everyone excited because of its low-light shooting capabilities (high ISO) and its 1080p video recording ability. The first movie demo was created by Vincent La Foret, check it out. The 5D Mark II started shipping on November 25th.

iriver upgrades their E100 series

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

To commemorate 1 million of their E100 MP3 players being sold, iriver has decided to upgrade them by releasing what they call the E100 Season 2.

Basically, the Season 2 doesn’t add that many new upgrades, but each mp3 player is now offered in more colors and more storage capacities.  They all come in different color variations of white, orange, and silver.  Also, they are available in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB models.  Otherwise, expect features and format support to be essentially the same.  One thing I imagine to be different is the current pricing.  Since these models would be a little more advanced, pricing would probably go up a little bit.

Firewinder relies on wind to power up

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Want to do your bit in keeping the earth green while decorating your home? Well, there are many ways to do so, including solar-powered fairy lights, solar-powered lawnmowers and the like, and today we have yet another idea for you to consider - the Firewinder. Let’s face it, any product named like it will definitely be interesting to look at, and the Firewinder certainly doesn’t come up short when it comes to looking cool! This decorative outdoor light is able to visualize the wind’s energy, turning just about any breeze into light to give your garden a lovely glowing ambience.

100% wind-powered, Firewinder is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. By day it’s a relatively unobtrusive dangling corkscrew doodah that spins in the wind. But when night falls and the wind blows, it lights up, creating a beautiful spiraling effect. The faster the blow the greater the glow, so in a real gust Firewinder becomes a pulsating pillar of light. It’s truly spellbinding and eco-friendly to boot. Firewinder’s helical wing captures the wind from any angle, and it’s so light it will catch the lightest of breezes. Simply attach it to a tree, roof terrace or wall using the included hanging kit (featuring sturdy stainless steel quick release fixing points) and wait for the wind to blow.

The Firewinder was specially designed to spin clockwise, so those who wish it to do so otherwise are out of luck. Small issue that, though. It is also nice to know that the Firewinder has been specially engineered to withstand just about any kind of inclement weather, capable of offering year after year of mesmerizing entertainment without adding to your home’s carbon footprint. Firebox is currently carrying the Firewinder for £99.99 a pop. Why not go green this holiday season instead of further burdening the earth with more plastic devices that do more than just sip power?

Sonim XP3: The beast of all phones

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

When I say beast I do not mean in looks (like the iphone), in functionality (like the G1) or low cost (like the Motorola Dyna 8000X).  I’m talking about the height of practicality, a phone designed to suffer the falls, scratches and splashes that your average Joe phone would break merely looking at.  This phone is not about looks, being small, or taking high resolution photos: it is the sort of phone you would expect to see on a building site, or on the top of a mountain.  Let me introduce the Sonim XP3.

It has a yellow and black color scheme: the yellow helping for visual purposes and the black being the substantial rubber edges that this phone boasts.  It has a reasonably large anti glare and shock resistant screen with large functional buttons, but only those that are necessary, with special care to make them durable and extra wide.

This phone is dust and micro-particle proof.  It will also operate under extreme thermal conditions, from -20 to +60 degrees centigrade which covers most of the temperatures that the world can throw at you.

Another major killer of phones is water, but the XP3 has no problems with water as it can withstand being submerged up to 1 meter in depth which eliminates the need for a cover on those mountain treks.  I think after water, the second biggest phone torment is drops and this phone can cope comfortably with drops onto concrete from up to 2 meters.

Other major practical features include the extra loud speakers designed to handle noisy environments (like waterfalls or nightclubs), an extra long battery life, and a 3 year unconditional guarantee, which is pretty long for a mobile phone.  Oh yeah, and it has an in built-in torch, making it the Swiss army knife of phones.

Regarding core functions, it still performs perfectly well.  It is Tri-band (so good for traveling) as well has having WAP and Bluetooth capabilities and the usual SMS/alarm/PC sync capabilities.  Optional extras include a secure looking belt clip, and an external antenna for when finding reception is really difficult.  All in all, this is quite an exceptional phone, and if you often find yourself hiking or mountaineering, then this is a must.

It is the pinnacle of mountain technology combined with some (only slightly outdated) modern technology.  Yes, this won’t sell as well as any Nokia/blackberry/Apple phone, but it provides a real solution, and one that is valuable.

Doorbusting at Long Island Walmart leads to worker’s death

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Nov 28th 2008 at 1:05PM

Remember that completely insane crime wave that hit when Sony’s hotly anticipated playstation 3 finally rushed onto the scene in very limited numbers? Yeah, well that side of humanity is rearing its ugly head again, as an employee perished when legions of crazed Black Friday shoppers blazed through the doors of a Long Island Walmart. The worker was an overnight store clerk who was simply trying to hold back the crowds before the doors officially opened at 5:00AM. According to Jimmy Overby, another employee at the store: “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me.” Words to the wise: either do your Black Friday shopping from the safety of your own home, or be careful, cool, calm and collected when you venture out.

China’s QiJi i6 supports Android, Windows Mobile, lust in one package

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

by Chris Ziegler, posted Nov 28th 2008 at 3:01PM

For now, Android’s got about as much enterprise support as a Sidekick (well okay, a little more, but not much) — so that’s got to be keeping G1s out of the hands of throngs who are too tied-down to Exchange, Notes, or some equally stuffy piece of server-side software to be able to make the switch. China’s QiJi feels your pain, which is where the company’s surprisingly okay-looking i6 comes into play: the handset supports both Android and Windows Mobile, although you can’t dual-boot — you’ve got to choose one and run with it until you decide to install the other. It packs a 624MHz processor, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, a trackball, and — in lieu of a QWERTY slide — an on-screen Chinese keyboard with stylus support that we haven’t seen before. Android, we love ya and all, but until you go through puberty, this multi-platform support is just about the best thing we’ve ever heard.

[Thanks, zsx]

Motorola Alexander and Attila spotted, but not clearly

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Nov 28th 2008 at 12:05PM

This is really just confirmation of existence more than anything, given that we’ve already seen purported shots of both the Attila and Alexander before, but at least we’re assured that these forthcoming Motorola smartphones are more than just subjects of one’s Photoshopping escapades. The image you see above is accompanied by no additional information whatsoever, but we must say, these look strangely seductive in greyscale. Could these really be the first truly black-and-white handsets? Do it Moto, we dare you.
