Lines form outside Softbank Mobile Stores

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

3G iPhone frenzy is a worldwide phenomenon, basically any country selling it will see hardcore iphone lovers forming lines outside stores days before the actual launch. It is the same with Japan’s Softbank Mobile stores, as the main building in Tokyo already has at least 20 people waiting in line before it is officially released. The first person is Sano, a 24-year old computer science student, who won his place there simply by winning a rock-paper-scissors game with the rest of the group. While the rest of Japan’s phones are highly sophisticated, it is the full software suite of the iPhone that attracts buyers. I’m sure a waterproof version will do phenomenally well in Japan, properly modeled or not.

Ikea’s PS Laptop Workstation for the space challenged

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Ikea is one of those stores that I can’t help but love, especially being young and broke enough that my living space tends to be a bit cramped.  Just about any storage or furniture issue I have Ikea has some kind of a solution for.  The unfortunate thing is that I’d like to buy about half the things at their store, which adds up to a small fortune in furniture.  Well if you don’t have room for a full desk and would like a little corner to park your laptop and work for a few hours Ikea also has a solution for that.

They have the Ikea PS, which mounts to the wall and just looks like a small locker when it is closed up.  When opened it has a small tray to set your laptop on.  As well as a couple of nooks for speakers or any other small gadgets you might want to use.  The workstation comes in both white and red.  The desk would also be great for teens with small rooms or one that they have to share, to give then a designated work space.  It is being sold for $59.99 and can be bought either in store or online.

Hitachi introduces second-gen 1TB Deskstar 7K1000.B hard drive

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 2:01PM

Remember the day you drooled all over your keyboard when Hitachi introduced a 1TB internal hard drive? Yeah, like a year and a half ago? The outfit’s most recent HDD announcement isn’t likely to have nearly the same effect, but those who skipped the first-gen version in order to get a more refined product the second go ’round will surely be delighted. Today marks the debut of the 1TB Deskstar 7K1000.B, which goes down as “the world’s most energy-efficient 7,200RPM one-terabyte hard drive.” Said drive features a new three-disk design which improves idle power consumption up to 43% over its 1TB predecessor, but unfortunately, there’s no telling how long you’ll have to wait to actually buy this currently unpriced overlord of storage.

ECS G10IL: Stateside September for $399

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 4:04AM

ECS has been teasing the netbook market for months now with its G10IL — meticulously surveying the competition and batting its eyelashes at US consumers. Fortunately, LAPTOP was able to sit down with Henry Kwan of ECS to help bring the flirtatious cycle to a satisfying end. Accordingly, we now know that the G10IL will ship in 8.9- and 10-inch models with the latter most likely shipping to US soils. It’ll be available at an entry-level price of $399 in September running Linpus Lite 9.4 Linux off an 8GB SSD. It’ll also be configurable with XP on an 80GB disk and EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA data for much more. No sentimental delusions of educating the world’s children here, the G10IL is meant for serious business use only. How refreshingly direct ECS.

Auroroa: the open source DJ mixer

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Ryan Block, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 7:05AM

Sick of paying top dollar for your mixers? Yeah, so are we. But we’re not so sure about building our own from scratch, even if you can get the full source code and build schematics to whip up your own Auroroa open source mixer. (They’ll sell you posers one pre-built, too, if you want to front it.) Matching, scratching, and tasteful song selection? You’re on your own there, pally boy.

First four free apps for Apple App Store revealed?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Eagle-eyed geek Aza noticed something about 7 minutes and 45 seconds into the Apple iPhone Guided Tour and it has us all speculating. It seems that during the tour they show a quick glimpse of a page on the App Store where four programs are listed as available and FREE. Those programs are Twitterrific, AOL’s AIM, Six Apart’s Typepad, and an eBay application.

No word on whether or not these will be officially available on launch day and/or if they’ll be free, but chances are they will since this is the guided tour from Apple itself, after all.

Good news that AOL is planning to offer up its AIM client for free. I would have expected that, but you never know when it comes to coding for proprietary devices.

Also, Twitterrific will make it even easier to twitter on your iphone, though I prefer the Jailbroken application Twinkle.

Check out the screen shot taken from the video below.
