A Bubble A Day Makes A Happy Day

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Everybody loves to pop bubble wrap; some even say that it’s a great stress reliever. Here’s one bubble wrap that users won’t be too hasty to pop. This latest Bubble Wrap Calendar expects users to exercise self control and only pop a bubble a day. It may not be the most hi-tech gadget on the planet, but it’s still simple and cool. This fun calendar costs about $30.

Exquisitely Creepy Steampunk Gas Mask

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

This rather disturbing object is called the Steampunk Gas Mask 9. It marries the compulsory Steampunk materials, leather and brass, with a genuine Soviet-era gas mask. As an object, it is beautiful, and exquisitely crafted. The prop makers on Doctor Who could learn a thing or two from the tinkerer responsible, Bob Basset.

But as apparel? No. This should never, ever be worn, at least not outside the bedroom. As Meredith Scheff writes over at the Steampunk Workshop, “even gimps are getting into the steampunk”.

TomTom HD Traffic passes through FCC, expect in States soon

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

TomTom came out with a GPS that boasts HD traffic capabilities, and it had been a hit in Europe. It recently passed through the FCC, and should be available in the US soon…hopefully. Details are scarce on this GPS, as there is no word on who will be the carrier for this, and how much the services will cost.

Basically, HD traffic uses cell phone data to display real time traffic updates. You might be thinking, there are already GPS’ which can give live traffic updates, what makes HD traffic so special? Well, HD traffic gives up to 5 times more traffic data and it covers up to 10 times more roads than GPS’ with basic live traffic updates. Additionally, it still maintains the same specs as the European version, which include a 4.3-inch LCD screen, 1GB of storage and SIM card.  Unfortunately, no word on pricing or availability at this time.

Palm Centro gets Electric Blue Color

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

One of the best-selling Palm devices to date is the Palm Centro as it hits the sweet spot of pricing and performance. AT&T will be offering a new color for the Centro from July 11th up till September 20th, so folks who lust after an electric blue Centro can fork out $99 and remain tied down to AT&T for a couple of years. July 11th is also the 3G iphone’s release date, so expect hordes of people to overlook the Centro then. Makes me wonder what Palm executives were high on when they decided to release this new color on that particular date. Surely they do not hope to go against the grain by hoping the Centro will make a splash on that day? Image courtesy of Crave.

Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I know when most people say “Halo”, what springs to mind is that fragging-cool game for the Xbox. In this case, I am referring to the Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock Flashlight that even Master Chief himself would be comfortable with.

The six functions of the Halo are the projection alarm clock, flashlight, clock, timer, calendar, as well as a built-in compass. The projection alarm clock, which means you can shine your wake-up time right on the wall. Apparently, you can also shine a regular white light, as the device has a flashlight function.

I believe that the many multifunctional uses of the Halo makes it an ideal companion device for campers. True, campers may not need or even want an alarm, but they would certainly be in need of a Compass. They might also enjoy the Timer for cooking food on the fire. Of course, if a camper was really roughing it, they might forget about using the Calendar and Clock.

The Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock is designed to fit in your hand, and runs on three 1.5 volt batteries. It is available at the Vavolo site, for an unbelievable price of $3.99. You can also get a good deal if you buy it in conjunction with one of their other devices.

Drobo 2 revealed, Firewire added

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

You remember Drobo, right? The “robot” that stores your data, from Data Robotics.  Well, its been over a year since its launch, and the makers of Drobo have decided to give their product a little update.  Today, the “Drobo 2” has been announced, featuring not one, but two Firewire 800 ports. The device also added a more powerful processor to support the Firewire ports and a quieter case fan. Data Robotics claims that the Firewire ports allow for two times the data transfer speeds, blowing other competitors out of the water. However, the Drobo still lacks any sort of Ethernet/Wi-Fi connectivity.

You can still get the Drobo for the same $500 price tag, and $900 gives you two 1TB drives; $1,300 gives you four 1TB drives.  If you don’t care for Firewire, the original Drobo is selling (until stock runs out) for $350 or $750, and $1,075 — empty or bundled with either two 1TB or four 1TB drives, respectively.

3G iPhone Unboxing

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I wonder what’s the big deal about an unboxing, but apparently plenty of people go nuts over it as there seems to be something special about a device that is unveiled for the first time. Here we have a purported 3G iphone unboxing image (8GB model) courtesy of iPhonePortugal. The package looks pretty real, while the power adapter is slightly rounded despite sharing many similarities with the current power supply in Europe. The rounded back will definitely yield some fingerprints when you look at it against the light. The jury is still out on this one - do you think this is the real deal or a fake?

LED Heart-Shaped Pillow

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Everyone can always make do with some gifts in their life, as it helps them feel wanted and loved. The LED Heart-Shaped Pillow says a whole lot, offering a comfortable place to lie on when you’re feeling low or simply just want to get comfortable on the couch. It works best when the lights are turned off, and I would recommend a mug of hot chocolate to go along with this $24 purchase to cap off a perfect winter evening with your loved one.

Elgato EyeTV DTT Deluxe

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Elgato is finally doing macbook air owners right with their new EyeTV DTT Deluxe USB dongle that blends in with the overall thin theme of the MacBook Air, and will be able to easily fit itself into other Mac USB 2.0 ports without any hassle. The EyeTV DTT Deluxe will come with a couple of antennas that make up a standard digital TV tuner aerial and a telescopic job. The former is meant for areas with weak signals, while the latter serves strong signal zones. You won’t find analogue tuners on board with this offering though, but Elgato did point toward its improved signal processing hardware that helps deliver lossless images to your screen. Each €79.95 purchase will be accompanied by Elgato’s EyeTV DVR software and a remote control. There is no word on a US release yet, so our friends across the pond will be able to enjoy the EyeTV DTT Deluxe first.

E-BALL Multiplug Connector looks like a D20

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Powerstrips aren’t exactly the most exciting of electronic devices. However, on occasion someone decides to be a little creative with the boring powerstrips. It also looks a bit like a D20 (even if it is a bit short on sides), which shows a bit of love for your D&D days, as well as the rest of the geeky games that involve dice. Even if your back in the day gaming was just last week. I know, it’s hard to get through those long work weeks to get to your weekend round of Magic.

While MarshallAH.DESIGN may have not intentionally slipped in this powerstrip as one with an overabundance of geek appeal, I’m sure many could look past that. However, looking at the plugs it is quite obviously not a US product, so those of us in the states will either have to cry about it or pony up the dough for some adapters. Then again those in the UK won’t be holding this over our heads for long, since this is a design and sadly there is no info on selling it. Which means until this is actually created by someone, we are all stuck with our boring powerstrips.
