Free T-Mobile deals at Wal-Mart, some even offering cash back

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Anyone looking to become a new T-Mobile customer may just be in luck. Wal-Mart of all places currently has a sweet deal in place on a variety of models. Some of the items include the Wing, which comes with a free Kingston 1GB memory card and USB card reader and will (after rebate) give you $50.

The titanium blackberry Curve, Pearl and Dash are all in the same category, giving you $50 cash back, however these last three do not offer the free memory card and USB card reader. Still a nice deal though.

The Samsung Blast, Katalyst and the SGH-T639 will all get you $75 back after rebates. They also have some good deals on the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone, MOTORIZR as well as some MOTORAZR models.

Of course most of these deals require a mail-in-rebate so be sure to fill out all your paperwork. Click the product link below to check out the full list of deals.

Skyscraper Escape Rig Designed to Save Lives

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Well all remember that day and the knowledge of those caught in the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. Innocent people caught between flames and flight with their only choice being how they will leave this world. Many choice the latter and jumped. And as a result, the images of 9-11 are forever etched in our memories. No doubt, this has been the inspiration behind The Wizard Escape System, a rig which promises to give those caught in a raging high rise fire a third option.

The design concept is rather simple. A body harness, a long and strong steel cable, and and a play-out pulley system which will carefully, but quickly, lower a survivor to safety. And it’s all self contained in a suitcase small enough to fit in the corner of your office. When office workers are stuck with a last resort, they put on the harness and attach the lifeline from the suitcase to something heavy enough to carry their weight. The suitcase pulley system will be anchored to a desk or poll and will play out the lifeline, thereby lowering the survivor to rescue workers below.
Unfortunately, in the concept, the suitcase only carries about 250 meters of Kevlar strengthened wire. So it can only realistically be deployed in buildings below ten stories. However, those working in dramatic high rises the height of the WTC can always get their skydiving license and cry Geronimo.

Violight’s izap UV toothbrush sanitizer

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Apparently I’m on a disinfecting kick today, because this is the 2nd one of the day.  This time though it’s actually sold in the US and it’s a case that not only carries your toothbrush, but disinfects it as well.  Which is great for when it is at home, just purely because of the bacteria in the air in the bathroom.  It would also be nice for travelers since research has shown that those that stay in hotel rooms go home with germs and tend to get a cold or the flu.

The company that makes the izap (Violight) actually makes several different similar sanitizing products.  All of which use UV technology to eliminate 99.9% of the germs.  This is the cheapest and most portable, but if you’re looking for something that does several at once, you can check out the site for more.  The izap itself comes with a free toothbrush and automatically will start working when you close the lid.  It comes in clear, blue and orange and is being sold for $19.95.  You can buy it online or at Walgreens.

Upcoming BlackBerry lineup for Rogers Wireless

Monday, July 7th, 2008

A recently surfaced blackberry roadmap has just shown its face for Rogers. While this has not been officially confirmed yet, the projected dates are however believable and seem to fit in well with the prior rumors.

First up, it looks like Rogers is on track to offer their customers the BlackBerry Bold before AT&T here in the US. However it looks like the earlier projected date of July 25 is only partially true. It looks that the phone will be available to dealers on that date, with it hitting the regular retail market just a few days later on July 29.

The next two, both of which should be exciting is the newly announced flip-styled KickStart, which is expected to be available in September, however no specific date has been announced, or even rumored aside from mid-to-late September. And finally the Javelin is expected sometime during late November or early December, in other words it will be there in time for the holidays.

Original Project Grizzly suit being auctioned off

Monday, July 7th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 7th 2008 at 2:10PM

Troy Hurtubise has certainly auctioned off a few grizzly fighting suits before (not to mention the Halo-inspired Trojan), but this is likely your one and only shot at procuring the original Project Grizzly Mk VI suit worn by Troy himself in the generally unknown cult classic Project Grizzly. The suit is being offered to the highest bidder as the Grizzly Proof exhibit in Toronto shuts down, and while the starting bid sits at $500, it’ll take upwards of 40 grand before Mr. Hurtubise’s debts associated with the suit are cleared. C’mon, you know that’s all the reason you need to throw your hat into the ring.

[Thanks, Cantraider]

Anonymous text tips to help fight crime

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Next time you want to help “take a bit out of crime” reach for your mobile phone. According to an Associated Press article, police departments are embracing the idea of allowing citizens to text in tips about criminal activity in their area. Traditionally, local police departments have relied on a Crime Stoppers hotline, which asks people to phone in if they have any information regarding an existing case or other criminal activity in their area.

The text messaging system, which allows text messages to be sent anonymously, will encrypt a caller’s phone number before it is sent on to police.

Police departments in Boston and Cincinnati began receiving anonymous text messages with tips about a year ago. The Louisville Police Department in Kentucky started supporting their new system last month.

This is a brilliant move by these three police departments. If you ever observe a teenager for long enough you will realize they are more apt to text message their friends than pick up a phone and call them. If these kids won’t even call their friends, the likelihood that they would actually call a police hotline to report criminal activity is extremely slim.

Rolando, an iPhone game that actually looks fun

Monday, July 7th, 2008

In case you haven’t already seen the trailer for Rolando, you should definitely spend the 86 seconds to check it out. It’s a platformer with puzzle elements that looks quite impressive given the limitations of the iPhone. It seems reminiscent of the Lemmings with physics puzzles and the iPhone’s unique control scheme. The developer is Handcircus, Simon Oliver’s micro-studio.

The game will sell through Apple’s App store sometime in August and will work with the iphone and ipod Touch. The expected price is $9.99.

Casio EX-F1 Has Now “prerecord movie” Function With Firmware Update

Jul 07, 2008 Casio’s EX-F1 camera already recommended itself with its 60 fps burst mode and abilities to shoot 1,200 frames per second SuperSloMo video, but now it looks like it is going to get another solid boost with its new, slightly unnerving firmware upgrades.

According to Casio, the addon will be so-called “prerecord movie” function that apparently bends time and space to begin recording five seconds before the owner of this camera actually presses the movie button.

This feature will work with all movie modes, even with the full high definition mode and the aforementioned 1,200 fps mode.

Windows Mobile cameras faceoff

Monday, July 7th, 2008

There are a lot of things to think about when buying a mobile phone. One thing that has stepped up in priority lately is the quality of the built-in digital camera. To help you with your purchase decision, Arne Hess over at The Unwired has put together a comparison article pitting the cameras on the HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, Samsung i900 Omnia, and Sony Ericsson X1 against each other. The results are surprising, with most of them being pretty comparable. One thing that he did note is the ease of use of both the picture taking application and the actual act of taking a shot, with two cameras sporting dedicated shutter buttons.

I’ve been snapping pictures with the iphone and when I switched to the HTC Touch Diamond I snapped even more. It’s definitely becoming more commonplace to want to snap a good quality phone with your mobile phone.

With phones becoming our all-in-one device, it’s nice to see that even the Windows Mobile ones are comparable to digital cameras these days.
